OPSEC With Panasonic CF-54

Been traveling a lot and my Toughbook CF-54 has been serving good. Since projects we do are mostly confidential for specific customers working in intelligence sector - we are always taking OPSEC pretty seriously.

One feature I could not live without is removable hard drives. Every time I have to leave my laptop behind, I extract HD to carry along. This makes machine in hotel room total brick for anyone interested.

And yes, I have not booted Windows since '90's. That's another OPSEC tip.

Thanks so much for all your valuable Linux posts on the Toughbooks. I am planning to buy a CF54 because I want something durable and now I feel comfortable spending the money because i know Linux will work. Can you tell me how the speakers sound? I have a CF31 and that is nice and loud and can be heard in noisy environments.

Yes, this CF54 is still my main development computer with debian 9.1. I was offered Dell XPS13, 5720 and others with good Linux compatibility - but computer robustness was something I could not live with Dell. So I chose CF54 over Dell easily.

My speaker sound in CF-54 is loud and clear, so no issues in there. 3.5mm plug works nicely muting speakers when connected.

Pay attention to model you are getting, CF54 with internal CD/DVD drive has this bumb in bottom of machine (which I don't like) and I have equipped my side slot with secondary battery.

Internal M2 (for SSD) is SATA only. So I have my system drive on removable 2.5" SATA slot and internal M2 is only for data (when required and equipped).

Hi, I am understanding from you that the case for the dvd drive equiped model is different. Does this mean that if you buy the model without the dvd drive, you can't add it later? I am also thinking about getting the second battery but I am just curious because I may be interested in the DVD drive at some point. My unit will be shipping with the Kaby Lake core i7. I will post back here with its compatibility once I receive the unit.

Yes, device with DVD inbuilt cannot use extra battery. I have not understood complete logic behind accessory bay in CF54 - but what ever you choose, it's amazing hardware.
